Tom Lee Says Bitcoin, Ethereum Decoupling Chip Stocks Is Its '1934 Moment'

Fundstrat’s T om Lee says the recent strength in Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) and Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH) is signaling a structural shift in crypto adoption, even as semiconductor stocks and the broader AI trade lose momentum. Crypto’s ‘1934 Moment’ Speaking in a CNBC interview on July 28, Lee noted that investors are increasingly looking beyond U.S. regulatory uncertainty and focusing on global crypto adoption and tokenization. Despite concerns that the Federal Reserve could remain hawkish, elevated oil prices and fading enthusiasm around AI-related equities, BTC and ETH have continued to outperform.

"The price of crypto is not following what people expect," Lee said.

He pointed out that Ethereum (+19% in a month) has recently outperformed Bitcoin (+6% in a month), even as the odds of the CLARITY Act passing this year have fallen into the 30% range on prediction markets.

Bitmine Immersion Technologies Inc (NYSE: BMNR ) reported a fresh Ethereum purchase Monday, with the ETH/BTC ratio hitting a three month-high.

Lee described the CLARITY Act as a landmark piece of legislation that would establish a single federal regulator for much of the crypto industry, replacing the current patchwork of state-level oversight.

He compared the proposal to the creation of the U.S.

SEC in 1934, which standardized securities regulation across the country. “Bitcoin and all crypto are having that 1934-type moment,” Lee said.

Fed Unlikely To Hike Rates Lee also dismissed growing speculation that the Federal Reserve could raise interest rates.

He said prediction markets likely reflect hedging activity around binary policy outcomes rather than a genuine expectation of tighter monetary policy. “I wouldn’t expect them to raise rates,” Lee said.

Instead, Lee believes underlying inflation continues to soften as shelter costs weaken and wage pressures ease.

While tariffs and oil prices could temporarily lift inflation, he argued those factors alone are unlikely to justify a new rate-hiking cycle.

If policymakers decide additional tightening is necessary, Lee suggested the Fed could rely more on balance-sheet reduction through quantitative tightening rather than increasing policy rates.
