Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA ) is increasing its capital and operating expenditure to achieve the most rapid industrial expansion in the U.S. since World War II, as revealed by CEO Elon Musk and CFO Vaibhav Taneja.

Tesla Enters Heavy Investment Cycle During the Q2 earnings call on Wednesday, Taneja expressed the company’s readiness to spend aggressively on vehicles, autonomy, and robotics, anticipating strong returns.

He marked 2026 as a “massive CapEx year” for Tesla.

Tesla’s reported a record capital expenditure (CapEx) of $5.79 billion for the second quarter, representing a 142% year-over-year increase from the prior year.

At the same time, its total GAAP operating expenses climbed 47% year-over-year to $4.35 billion in the second quarter of 2026.

He also highlighted that the surge in operating expenses was mainly due to significant R&D-related activities, including pre-production ramp costs for new products like the Tesla Semi, Optimus, Cybercab, and other AI initiatives.

He also noted a positive impact on the company’s net income from a $1 billion mark-to-market gain on their Space Exploration Technologies Corp (NASDAQ: SPCX ) holdings. “Note that we are in a big investment cycle and expect our operating expenses, largely driven by R&D, to continue to grow in 2026 and beyond, ” said Taneja.

Musk Prioritizes Speed Over Cost Elon Musk said Tesla is prioritizing speed over maximizing capital efficiency, aiming to invest in capital expenditures as quickly as possible without being wasteful.

He explained that accepting slightly lower efficiency can accelerate projects and ultimately deliver greater long-term value for the company.

He said he believes no company has ever achieved something on this scale, comparing it only to historic efforts like Henry Ford’s mass production of the Model T or the industrial mobilization during World War II. “I think probably this is the fastest industrial scale-up since World War II in America.” Musk also thanked Micron Technology Inc. (NASDAQ: MU ) for allocating a significant share of its memory supply to Tesla, despite intense industry demand and soaring memory prices.

He said Micron faced difficult allocation decisions and expressed appreciation for securing the supply on reasonable terms for the coming years.
