Food and Drug Administration will soon issue a statement recommending consumers avoid lettuce at Taco Bell locations in Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky and Indiana.

Although they caution that multiple produce items remain under review, and no definitive culprit has been publicly confirmed.

Michigan health authorities, drawing on interviews with more than 1,000 patients, have identified lettuce and leafy salad greens as the leading suspected source of contamination.

In response to the escalating outbreak and ongoing federal probe, Taco Bell has voluntarily and temporarily pulled several fresh ingredients from select restaurants, describing the move as a precaution.

The company, a division of Yum! Brands Inc. (NYSE: YUM ) has emphasized that the health and safety of its guests is its top priority and says it is closely following guidance from public health agencies.

Produce Industry Questions Data Behind Lettuce Focus The produce industry is pushing back on how the outbreak is being investigated.

The International Fresh Produce Association criticized the heavy reliance on patient recollections to identify suspect foods, arguing that current data may explain only a portion of the reported cases.

IFPA Chief Science Officer Max Teplitski warned that Cyclospora’s notoriously complex life cycle and inconsistent detection methods make it difficult to track in the environment and across supply chains.
