Trump’s Golden Dome Push Gets $1.75 Billion Boost, Space Force Orders 36 Missile-Tracking Satellites From Sierra Space and L3Harris

Space Development Agency awarded about $1.75 billion to Sierra Space and L3Harris Technologies Inc. (NYSE: LHX ) to build 36 missile-warning and missile-tracking satellites for President Donald Trump’s Golden Dome missile-defense program.

Golden Dome Moves Into Satellite Production The awards move a major part of the proposed space-based shield from concept toward production.

SDA said the satellites will support the Tracking Layer of its Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture and should be available for launch by the end of 2028.

Sierra Space CEO Dan Jablonsky said, "This contract demonstrates Sierra Space’s capabilities as a formidable player in American national security." Trump Order Drives Missile Shield Push Trump ordered the Pentagon in January 2025 to build what he first called the " Iron Dome for America," saying ballistic, hypersonic and cruise missiles "remain the most catastrophic threat facing the United States." The order directed the Pentagon to accelerate development of the Hypersonic and Ballistic Tracking Space Sensor layer and to develop space-based interceptors.

Trump’s Golden Dome initiative, estimated at $175 billion, is part of a broader push that could deliver significant gains for companies like L3Harris and other defense contractors, while also tying into the wider $151 billion SHIELD procurement effort aimed at expanding opportunities for both established defense firms and emerging technology players.

Cost Debate Shadows Defense Ambitions The program’s cost remains contested.

The Congressional Budget Office estimated in May that a national missile-defense system broadly consistent with Trump’s order would cost about $1.2 trillion over 20 years.

Price Action: LHX stock closed 0.46% higher at $290.01 on Tuesday.

The stock has been down 4.75% so far this year.
