ECB Enlists 36 Payment Providers for 2027 Digital Euro Pilot

The European Central Bank selected 36 payment service providers to participate in an upcoming 12-month digital euro trial beginning in the latter half of 2027, according to a Tuesday release. The chosen payment providers will help the ECB and the 19 involved national central banks in the euro area test a functional beta version of the currency, which will not carry a legal tender status. The pilot is intended to simulate real-world digital euro transactions, including both online and offline use. The trial will allow the providers to deliver services outside their home countries. The participating nations include Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Slovenia, and Slovakia.
